*** About Cabrillo National Monument: Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This was the first time a European expedition had set foot on what later became the west coast of the United States. The monument offers breathtaking views of San Diego's harbor and skyline, as well as the Pacific Ocean. The historic lighthouse within the monument, known as the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, was first lit on November 15, 1855, and served as a beacon for sailors until 1891. Today, the lighthouse has been restored to its 1880s appearance and serves as a museum where visitors can learn about the life of a lighthouse keeper in the 19th century.
